At risk of sounding like what my son would call a 'Noob', I'm seeking advice on the precise meaning of the expression 'lol'.
I thought it meant 'laugh out loud', but that doesn't always seem to make sense in the contexts I've seen it in.
Any suggestions?

You're right, it means Laugh out loud and nothing else to my knowledge.

For many months I used to think it meant 'lot's of love' - fortunately no misunderstandings ever occurred.

It does mean 'laugh out loud' and was originally intended as a way of indicating that you thought something was funny. However, some individuals don't seem to be able to form a sentence without using it somewhere, usually at the end, lol.
My hamster just died lol. Isn't the price of petrol just a scandal lol.
Grr.

I thought lots of love, then realised it was laugh out loud. I use both with my Cariad and with some friends using caps for lots of love and lower case for laugh out loud.
I think it's useful to denote a joke, where something is open to interpretation. I have a weakness for smileys for similar reasons. As a lover of ellipses, brackets and exclamation marks, no surprises there... ![]()
!
LOL and lol

Just noticed you're a top blogger in the list. Not sure what one has to do to get into 'Hit Parade', but well done!

Thanks to everybody for responding.
To me, flagging something up as a joke always seems a bit suspect - I mean, if it's funny, shouldn't it be instantly recognisable as such? - which is why I alwyas used to shy away from using 'smileys'. But I can see that things can easily be misinterpreted, so it could be a useful precaution sometimes.
Anyway, LOL (Suzee's way) to you all!
